Alagoas State keeps a living portion of Brazil’s history with historic towns and small villages completely preserved and away from the spotlights of the tourism traditional routes, so you can enjoy every moment of this history on your own time. With both the ocean and the river as frequent characters of its landscape, fishing is also an activity part of the local roots and culture, where fishing boats and jangadas (TN: rafts) enlighten an infinite horizon at each nightfall.

RIO SÃO FRANCISCO
Bathed by the famous São Francisco River and its impressive canyon, the ‘Velho Chico’ of so many blessings and the region fishermen’s stories, the surroundings of the reserve guard a living part of the local and Brazil’s history with its historic small villages completely preserved that have in the river its main livelihood.

POXIM
At the small village of Poxim, close to the reserve, the São José do Poxim church is one of the region’s architectural landmarks with its frail wood décor. The origin of this piece of art dates back to the second half of the 18th century. In this church rests relics from its people, both religious and historic.

MARECHAL DEODORO
The municipality of Marechal Deodoro, the first capital of Alagoas State is also the birthplace of the army Marshal of the same name, responsible for the proclamation of the Republic in Brazil. Here is where culture holds great significance for the region.


ILHA DO FERRO
In addition to the famous small village, we highlight the Ilha do Ferro, worldwide known for its handcraft where, for almost one century, generations of the island’s embroiderers dedicate themselves to the delicate ritual of drawing in the white linen the good night embroidery.


PENEDO
With its historic downtown protected as cultural heritage and home of the famous Santa Maria dos Anjos church, Penedo’s architecture is strongly influenced by the Baroque, especially its beautiful churches, being an inheritance from the Dutch that set on shore during the period of the great navigations. Still today, the town preserves ruins from the Forte Maurício de Penedo (Maurício de Penedo Fortress) at the banks of the São Francisco River.

A living piece of the culture and history of the Sertão, narrated to this day in books and tales of the popular imagination about the cangaço and the deeds of Lampião, but it's not just that. Piranhas is also known for its beautiful viewpoints, its waterfront, its formidable river, the cuisine, typical dances, and excellent options for outings for all ages.
